After a series of talks, I’ve extended my intent to teach. Even before the time I became a licensed dentist, I’ve always picture myself teaching in the college. Thanks to my former mentor, Dr. Samuel A. Paradiang, who was in dire need of assistance, I was given the opportunity. It was in Anatomy that I got the highest grade in during the dental board exams. Likewise, I was always exempted from taking the major exams die to my performance. Spatial intelligence and analytical skill was what we deemed necessary to pass the subject.
The plan was to introduce new ways of learning. With my background in teaching, I’ve immediately set plans and preparations. My crusade is one that started a long time ago. By then I already understood that a monotonous lecture by the teacher is a thing of the past, and should remain there. I also believe that varying strategies and learning opportunities would open the door to a more efficient and lasting learning experience. By now I have used 3D digital anatomy software, soap carvings of bone specimens, problem based learning, whole brain teaching, videos, audios, and lectures.
3D Anatomy Software. I usually use my desktop based Windows OS software. These apps or software were developed by Visible Body, and they run on iOS (iPhone or iPad), Mac, Android, and Windows OS. Depending on the topic, I have variants like Skeletal System, Muscular System, Anatomy and Physiology, and Human Anatomy. The advantages of using the software as opposed to the real bones are pretty obvious.
- The students can learn without the hazard of inhaling bone dust.
- Correct pronunciation is just a click away.
- Added information or details are just a click away.
- The models can be rotated unlike static pictures.
- The structure and how the systems are associated with each other are displayed.
- There are readily available built-in quizzes.
- References can be installed in their smart phones.
- The carvings can be a real-life guide in studying.
- The process of carving develops the dexterity of the students.
- The carvings are an excellent aid for retention as it not only stimulates the vision, but the tactile senses as well.
- It gives them a break from listening to lectures or reading a textbook.
- The output can be a treasured memory of that subject.
- Students go beyond memorization of facts into using them.
- Retention of information is longer.
- Students may be enthusiastic as it now involves real scenarios.
- National and International board exams are patterned this way.
- This prepares students to be smart and not just knowledgeable.
- Peer teaching comes from the thought: “The more you teach, the more you learn.”
- There are no apprehensions when a friend teaches a friend.
- This allows the students to interact, debate, and/or agree with each other.
- The students learn at a certain pace.
- This gives them a chance to explain whole concepts.
